As you enjoy your pet's companionship, a little extra effort on your part will teach her to be a good neighbor. Most communities require each cat in a household to be registered and some have limits on the number of cats one household can own. Keeping your cat indoors avoids problems with neighbors and protects your cat from being hit by a car, encounters with unfriendly dogs or attacks by other animals. Keep reading for more information on how you can keep you neighbors and your cat happy.

Breed of the Month: West Highland White Terrier
Commonly known as a “Westie,” this hardy terrier is known for its friendly strong-willed personality and beautiful bright white coat. This breed possesses an unbelievable amount of spunk and devotion in its compact little body. Westies originate from Poltalloch Scotland, and were originally known as Poltalloch Terriers. In those days, Westies were used to hunt out foxes and badgers.
Today, Westies are well loved as pets. Their small size makes them easy to travel with (Westies average around 15-22 lbs). They do require daily brushings because of their long coats. Regular haircuts are also necessary. Westies have a relatively long life expectancy, ranging from 11-15 years on average. Some dogs of this breed are prone to skin conditions and allergies, but for the most part Westies are hardy dogs that will live long and fulfilling lives.

1 cup whole wheat flour
4.25 oz jar crushed garlic
2 cups white flour
1/2 cup corn meal
1 medium shaker of grated parmesan cheese
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350*F. Cover cookie sheet with foil and coat with cooking spray. Sprinkle lightly with cornmeal and set aside. Process liver and garlic in food processor or blender until it looks like milk chocolate. Pour into large mixing bowl and blend in the rest of the ingredients. Spread evenly onto cookie sheet (mixture will be thick) and sprinkle lightly with parmesan cheese. Bake until no pink is left, usually about 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes, turn oven off but leave brownies inside until they are cooled. Cut into pieces and get ready for your dogs to love you even more than they do now!!!

Pet Refuge Adoption Spotlight: Bogie
Did someone say happy? That’s our Bogie. He is a 3 year old English Bull Dog/Boxer Mix, who when he arrived at the shelter had very
little hair. After several months of care and quality dog food, Bogie is now a very handsome dog who is looking for his forever home. Bogie asks that his new home have a fenced yard and lots of dog treats. He also mentioned that he gets really excited to meet humans so smaller children may find him to be a lot of dog.
To get more information about Bogie and other animals available for adoption at Pet Refuge, visit the Pet Refuge website: www.petrefuge.com or call (574) 256-0886.

Dear Dr. Paws,
I know that rabbits like vegetables, but what are the best kind to feed them? Can I just give my rabbit whatever, or are there certain varieties I should avoid? Also, how often should I be feeding them to her? Can I ever give her too many veggies? Help!
Sincerely,
Carla in South Bend
Dear Carla,
Vegetables are essential to your rabbit’s health. She should be receiving at least two cups of three different vegetables per 3 kg of body weight each day. I recommend feeding your rabbit a wide variety. Combine dark green and root vegetables for the healthiest rabbit, but avoid beans or rhubard. These can cause a rabbit to become sick. Additionally, try to select veggies that are high in Vitamin A.
Add one new vegetable at a time to your rabbit’s diet, as this will ensure that she can tolerate this specific food. If she experiences any adverse reactions (loose stools), discontinue this from the rabbit’s diet immediately. If you have additional questions, ask your veterinarian.
Good Luck!
Dr. Paws

Teach Your Cat to Wave
Join us each month as we a share a special trick for you to try with your dog (or cat!)
How to: Swiping at a morsel of food is a natural behavior for a cat. Hold a treat in your hand. Place it in front of the cat's nose but just out of reach of her front paws. Then, move it back and forth with your hands in a waving motion while telling your cat to "wave." As your cat reaches out for the food, it will appear as if she is waving. Once her motion simulates the waving behavior, praise her and give her a treat.

Rocco the Rockstar Rabbit
Submitted by: Diana Ganser-Brandt, Rocco’s “Grandma”
In a Nutshell: According to Diana, “Rocco has free range of my daughter’s apartment, and has been known to come up missing.” Recently, Diana became a bunny detective, searching 1.5 hours for this bunny, only to find him hiding inside a sofa pillow! In his spare time, Rocco enjoys having the run of his “mothers” apartment, eating carrots, and dressing up for parties (see him all “dolled up” as a bee for Halloween last year).
If you have a “weird” pet and want it featured in our newsletter, simply email us a photo. Each month we’ll be featuring a different furry (or slimy, or scaly…) friend right here in our “Weird Pet of the Month” section.
