Thrifty Tips for Thrifty Moms

We all know that times are tough and let’s face it…babies are expensive!  Below are just a few ways to save your dough and not deprive you or your little one.  If you have a tip you’d like to share, drop us an email.  We’ll be posting fresh tips every month.

Make Homemade Baby Food

It’s super-simple to mash steamed squash or a banana.  Just a small amount of fruits and veggies make multiple servings, so make a large batch and freeze it until you’re ready to use.  You’ll save yourself both money and time.

Return Gifts Promptly

Oftentimes, merchants put time limits on returns and exchanges. You don't want to miss your chance to get your money back or to get store credit. This is a great job to give to someone else in the family, so delegate!

1-800-DOCTORS

Call your pediatrician for advice about a problem before setting up an appointment. An experienced doctor may be able to diagnose an illness over the phone, saving you some much needed cash on co-payments.

Total Recall

Scary as it is, children’s products are always being recalled.  Check here for the latest in what to watch out for.

Children’s Animal Masks and Pendants Recalled
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Team Work Trading recently announced a voluntary recall of children’s masks and pendants.  About 1,400 of these products were sold nationwide in gift shop and modeling stores between November 2008 and March 2009.  The recalled masks and pendants have been found to contain high levels of lead.  No injuries have yet been reported. The toys sold for between $4 and $8 and were made in China.

What should you do if this affects you?

  • Immediately take the mask and pendants away from your child and contact Team Work Trading for a refund or exchange

  • For more information contact Team Work Trading collect at: (213) 680-4489 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Pacific Time.

Normal or Not?

Join us each month as we tackle the weird and wacky questions you have about all things baby.  To submit a question, simply send us an email.

Lately I’ve been noticing that my 3 month old daughter has started sleeping with her eyes open.  Is something wrong?  It just started happening and it looks really odd!

 ~ Sherrie in Granger

While it may look odd, this is very normal. Your child's "zombie sleep" (nocturnal lagophthalmos in doctor speak) is completely harmless and very common in infants. Most grow out of this habit by about 12 to 18 months of age. No one knows exactly why some babys sleep with their eyes open, but it may have something to do with spending more time in REM sleep. Babies spend much more time in this sleep cycle than adults, about 50 percent of their total sleep time. If your baby's "zombie sleep" disturbs you, gently stroke his eyelids closed. You may wish to consult your pediatrician if your child sleeps with his eyes open for many hours at a time or does it regularly beyond the age of 18 months.

Cute Baby of the Month

Day’Shawn Jewleus Jayroe

Submitted by: Barb Jayroe (Mother)
Birthday: March 23, 2008

In a Nutshell: According to Barb, “Day'Shawn is a 17 month old little boy that is all snails and puppy dog tails. He is a rough and tumble little tike that loves to play rough with everyone but can be so sweet at the same time. He was born on Easter Sunday 2008.  Day’Shawn loves playing at the park and out in the dirt and water puddles, but don't try to get him into the tub…he turns into a wild tiger!”
