We all know that times are tough and let’s face it…babies are expensive! Below are just a few ways to save your dough and not deprive you or your little one. If you have a tip you’d like to share, drop us an email. We’ll be posting fresh tips every month.
Labor Day: Believe it or not, some hospitals actually charge up to $8 a day for television privileges! So skip the Full House marathons and relish the time with your new arrival.
Baby Food: If you can, nurse. Not only is it healthy, but it can save you up to $1400 in your child’s first year of life. That’s a lot of dough!
Lose the Shoes: A nice pair of leather shoes for your baby can cost up to $30! But, did you know that babies actually learn to walk faster if they’re barefoot when indoors? Use soft booties (much cheaper!) to keep feet warm when your baby is outside.

Do It Yourself: Homemade Baby Food
Homemade baby food is a great money saver and just one more way to “go green”. If you haven’t tried it before, try this delicious recipe that your wallet and your baby will both adore.
Garden Veggie Delight (for babies 6-8+ months)
1. Combine fresh or frozen green beans and peas, summer and/or zucchini squash and small pieces of chopped carrots.
2. Add enough water to just cover the vegetables.
3. Cook until tender, reserving water.
4. Puree vegetables in blender or food processor,
5. Adding reserved water from the vegetables until mixture is of the desired consistency.
Another trick: You can make a big batch of this recipe and store and freeze in an ice cube tray. It’s a great way to save time and space. Just thaw one at a time and serve warm.

Scary as it is, children’s products are always being recalled. Check here for the latest in what to watch out for.
Stair Gate Recalled by Dorell Juvenile Group
In February, Dorell Juvenile Group announced the recall of about 100,000 Smart Light Stair Gates in collaboration with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The hinges holding the stair gate in place can break and cause the gate to be ineffective at blocking the top of a stairway. A young child may be able to get past the defective gate and fall down the stairs. The faulty gates were manufactured before December 31, 2007. The manufacture date can be found printed on a sticker inside the battery door. The gate involved in this recall is model number 42111 and is printed on a sticker underneath the handle panel. These recalled baby gates were sold at a number of mass merchandise stores including Baby’s R Us and Walmart between January 2005 and December 2007. They sold for approximately $60 and were made in China.
What should you do if this affects you?

Join us each month as we tackle the weird and wacky questions you have about all things baby. To submit a question, simply send us an email.
I’m a new mom and I of course spend LOTS of time with my infant. It seems like he always behaves better for my husband and the babysitter than he does for me. I don’t understand! I would think he’d behave the best for me because I’m around him the most. What’s going on???
~Allie in River Park
Dear Allie,
When your baby protests all your efforts to get him to sleep or eat, it can be very disheartening to see him acting like an angel for Grandma or Daddy. While it might feel like an insult, it’s actually a compliment! It can be a sign that you and your baby are bonding well. In fact, the more comfortable your baby is, the more he acts out because he trusts that you’ll be there for him no matter what. So it’s a sweet thing, but still not much fun for you.
This trend is unbelievably common, and can be extremely annoying; especially the older the child gets. The same kind of behavior can be observed in children years later as they enter preschool. They are working so hard to hold it all “together” in a situation where they are uncomfortable, and then they get home and let it all out. Again, no fun for you!
For now, keep in mind that at this time in development your baby’s fussiness when you’re around is normal. However, always consult a physician if you notice unusual changes in behavior and/or sleep patterns. Hang in there Allie! Your baby loves you and just doesn’t know how to communicate it. So take a deep breath and remember this the next time he flings peas in your direction over dinner!

Name: Gray Eric Reynolds
Submitted by: Amanda Reynolds (mommy) from Elkhart
Birthday: May 2, 2008
In a Nutshell: According to Amanda, “Gray loves to eat, eat, eat (his favorite is mashed avocado). He laughs very hard, loud and often—especially at his big brother and sister! He loves to clap and ‘dance’ to music. He loves our Yorkie, but I think she might love him more. She sits on his ‘lap’ and lets him pull her fur without so much as a yelp!”
If you have an adorable baby (0-18 months-old), send us a photo! Simply email us your photo and we’ll feature a different baby each month right here in the “Cute Baby” section of the E-Newsletter.
