I am in my first trimester and my morning sickness is out of control!  What can I do to help it not be so bad?

~ Selena in South Bend

First off, congratulations on your pregnancy! The first trimester can be a rough one for morning sickness, and some people are more prone to it than others. For some mother's to be it goes away after a few months, but others experience it for a large part of their pregnancy. I know this isn't very encouraging, but there are some things you can do to keep your morning sickness at bay. Here are some tips:

  • Eat small snacks throughout the day instead of actual meals. Little snacks will help keep your blood sugar steady and will help minimize your stomach's queasy feeling.
  • Go easy on the spices and seasonings. Avoid foods with a lot of pepper, hot chiles, and garlic.
  • Avoid greasy foods that have lots of butter, margarine, mayo, bacon, and anything fried. While you might be craving these foods, you will be sorry for eating them later!
  • When waking in the morning, get out of bed slowly. Making quick movements in the morning may be making you dizzy and cause you to feel nauseous.
  • Choose to snack on foods that are easy to digest. Try crackers, toast, baked potatoes, cooked pastas and fruits.

These are just a few tips we recommend. The most important thing is to listen to your body. If something is making you sick, stop doing it! If the morning sickness persists and is interfering with your everyday life, consult a doctor. Hang in there!
