Thrifty Tips for Thrifty Moms

We all know that times are tough and let’s face it…babies are expensive!  Below are just a few ways to save your dough and not deprive you or your little one.  If you have a tip you’d like to share, drop us an email.  We’ll be posting fresh tips every month.

Scrimp on all-in-ones.

Most of the time you’ll layer them under clothes anyway.  Shop the sales and you may find packs of onesies marked down because they’re slightly irregular.  You’ll never notice the defects, and after a baby spits up on something, it doesn’t look regular anyway!  And, when it comes to staples like all-in-ones and socks, buy white.  That way you can bleach them when they get dirty instead of spending extra money on laundry spray.

Don't buy baby clothes far in advance.

Newborns can have sudden growth spurts, so don't learn the hard way! Many times moms purchase things like winter coats for the next season when they're on clearance. It sounds like a great idea, unless your baby outgrows them before they ever get the chance to wear them! So be careful when making purchases for too far in the future.

Choose unisex shades and styles.

Hand-me-downs are great; unless your next child is a boy and all you have are an abundance of pink dresses. Try to keep the blues and pinks to a minimum and invest in neutral colors like greens, tans and yellows.

Do It Yourself! Homemade Baby Food

Do It Yourself: Homemade Baby Food

Tropical Fruit Salad with Avocado

1/3 ripe avocado, cubed
1/2 small ripe banana, sliced
1/2 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced
1/4 papaya, peeled and sliced
2 oz (1/4 cup) natural, plain yogurt
a drop of pure maple syrup

For older babies who can eat finger foods, simply place all the prepared fruits into a bowl. For younger babies, puree the fruits together.
Stir the maple syrup into the yogurt, then swirl the yogurt on top of the fruit.
For a little nutritional boost, top with a sprinkle of wheat germ.

Total Recall

Scary as it is, children’s products are always being recalled.  Check here for the latest in what to watch out for.

Buster Brown & Co. Clogs Children’s Shoes Recalled
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Buster Brown & Co. recently announced a voluntary recall of plastic clog shoes that are designed to look like cars.  About 1.4 million of these products were sold nationwide between August 2007 and June 2009. The shoes are being recalled due to decorative wheels that can detach and pose a choking threat.  While no injuries have been reported, there have been two reports of wheels detaching from the shoe.  The shoes sold for approximately $10-$25 and were made in China.

What should you do if this affects you?

  • Immediately take this product away from children and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

  • For more information contact Buster Brown & Co: (888) 869-1044 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

My daughter Gabriella is starting to teeth.  I was wondering if you had any advice on what I can do to ease her pain.  Help, before we both go crazy!!!

 ~ Helena in South Bend

Dear Helena,

Babies need some extra TLC when they're teething. Here are some things you can try to ease Gabriella's discomfort:

  • Massage-gently rubbing your child's gums with a clean finger or moist gauze pad can be soothing. Not only does it feel good, but it helps break down gum tissues. Doing this from day one can make teething much easier for your child throughout the teething process.
  • Chill Out-Cold decreases pain and inflammation, so a chilled teething ring (one with bumps and/or ridges works great) is often at the top of many parent's lists. These rings only stay cold for about 20 minutes though, so keep some backups in the fridge.
  • Tutti Frutti-Try freezing a skinned banana for an hour and holding it while your child chews on it. Cold, chewy and yummy!
  • Try medicine-Infant Tylenol is very safe when used properly, and can be a godsend. Just pay close attention to the labels. Infant tylenol is super-concentrated, and too much can be bad for a baby's liver. Base dosage on the baby's weight, and do not administer it more than every 4-6 hours.
  • Distractions-For many, the pain of of teething is worse at night when babies have no distractions. Try rocking to help soothe your little one.

Cute Baby of the Month

Name: Michael Wayne Gushwa
Submitted by:Tina Gushwa (Mother)
Birthday: August 20, 2007
In a Nutshell: According to Tina, " Michael is a happy kid who loves to “help” his Dad do yard work. He enjoys playing outside in his sandbox and going to the zoo. His favorite thing at the zoo is the goats, although he prefers to flirt with the little girls at the petting zoo to actually petting the goats himself. He is completely obsessed by cars, from hot wheels all the up to the real thing. He enjoys playing mechanic with his friends at daycare. They find all kinds of toy cars to fix and have great imagination when it comes to finding “tools” to make their repairs.
